Captions carry gaming clips — most viewers scroll with sound off, and gameplay footage is visually busy. This guide gives you concrete settings to dial into Caption Styles, using EzClap's actual controls.

Start from a preset

The built-in presets map to the common short-form looks:

  • hormozi bold — big, loud, high-energy. The default choice for hype gameplay moments.
  • clean social default — neutral and readable; safe for any game.
  • karaoke classic — word-by-word highlight; great for talk-heavy clips.
  • accessibility high contrast — maximum readability.
  • documentary clean / cinematic minimal — understated; better for storytelling clips than frag movies.

Pick one, then adjust with the rules below.

Readability over gameplay

Gameplay backgrounds are noisy, so contrast comes from the outline, not the fill:

  1. Keep text color white (or near-white) and outline color black.
  2. Set outline thickness around 2.5–3. This single setting does more for readability than any font choice.
  3. Add moderate drop shadow strength (~1.5) for extra separation; heavy blur gets muddy over motion.
  4. Use a bold font weight. Thin fonts disappear over particle effects.

Line settings that fit 9:16

  • Max words per line: 3 (EzClap's default) and max caption lines: 2. Short bursts read faster than sentences and keep the text block compact.
  • Turn on evenly distribute words so a 4-word segment renders 2+2 instead of 3+1.
  • Leave break long words after at 9 — gamer vocabulary ("unbelievable", usernames) overflows without it.
  • Remember the shrink-to-fit rule: huge font + many words per line makes lines auto-shrink smaller than your set size. If your captions render small, lower words per line before lowering font size.
  • Text case: all uppercase suits hype clips; sentence case suits commentary.
  • Turn on remove punctuation for the clean social look.

Position for the platform

Set text position near the vertical center (around 50%) rather than the bottom. TikTok and Shorts UI — description text, buttons, seek bar — occupies the bottom of the frame and will cover low captions. Details in the TikTok safe zones guide. Use the live preview with one of your own thumbnails as the background to sanity-check placement.

Animation: one effect, not five

  • highlight word (karaoke) with a bright highlight color is the proven engagement style for talk moments — viewers' eyes track the highlight.
  • build-up (word reveal) with pop suits punchline clips.
  • none is legitimate for fast action clips where the gameplay is the star.

Skip stacking intensity: pick one animation style and keep pop-up intensity modest.

Per-game profiles

Make styles-per-game automatic with assignments (game → template → default):

  1. Duplicate your base style per game family (e.g. "shooter caps", "chatting caps").
  2. On the assignments tab, bind each style to its Twitch games.
  3. Mark a second speaker with the v2 toggle in the caption editor and give voice 2 color something distinct for duo content.
